First planes, now trains….

a greener way to ship?

Earlier this month I blogged about an Israeli company that came up with an idea for reducing jet fuel usage on the ground.

That got me to thinking about other modes of transporation.  Interestingly, CSX has a whole page on their website dedicated to their efforts to “green up” their business and their image.  I  found interesting their claims that the EPA estimates that for every ton-mile, a typical truck emits roughly three times more nitrogen oxide and particulates than a locomotive.

EPA also reported last year that if just 10% of the nation’s freight were shifted to rail, fuel savings would approach one billion gallons annually.  Fact Check.Org confirmed industry claims that a train can move a ton of goods 436 miles on only one gallon of fuel!
