Composter defeat; try try again

6 May 2011

Out with old - in with the new

Well, as I predicted last year, the racoons, opossoms and squirrels have won round one.

Our composter’s multiple doors made it too easy for the neighborhood critters to get in.  While my wife insists that these animals are speeding the natural composting process, I’m concerned about encouraging disease vectors,  or possibly encouraging predators like foxes and coyotes, into our yard.

Therefore, we upgraded to a new composter with only one door.  The new composter sits on a base with wheels that allow it to spin to encourage aeration.  My 9-year old likes this.  The only challenge is that the new composter holds about half as much as the old one.

I have to admit - I was starting to feel like Carl.

I’m worried that we will soon have a line of composters in our yard.
