Canton’s IKEA To Go Solar.

13 Jan 2012

As I’ve blogged about before, in the last year or so, Chinese imports have significantly lowered the prices for solar panels (U.S. Solar Firms Hurt by Chinese Imports).  So, while the low prices are hurting U.S. manufacturers, they are also helping consumers and promoting rapid industry growth.

Yesterday, IKEA announced plans to install solar energy panels on five more of its United States locations – all of them in the Midwest – including the store in Canton Township.  Per the Detroit News, installations will begin this winter pending government approval, with completion expected this summer.  The company plans to install 4,157 solar panels at the Canton store, generating nearly 1.14 million kilowatt hours a year of electricity — the equivalent of powering 98 homes.  Good to see another retail store incorporating green construction practices (Green Hits Mainstream: Meijer completes the nation’s first LEED-certified supercenter remodel).
