Last week lithium-ion battery maker A123 Systems officially opened up its 291,000-square-foot battery factory in Livonia.  According to the company, the facility represents the largest lithium-ion battery plant for electric vehicles in the U.S.

The Massachusetts-based battery maker received a federal grant of $249 million, in addition to millions in state incentives, to build the factory. A123 expects the plant to start production in the first half of 2011.

This is a huge first step in Governor Granholm’s plan to make Michigan the advanced battery capital of the world.  For more information, check out this article in The New York Times.
