A greener way to taxi?

Will "solo" taxiing be a thing of the past?

As we all know, airlines are constantly trying to lighten their loads to save fuel.  Now, an Israeli group has come up with a way for a semi-robotic “tugboat” to move large commercial planes from the gate to the runway without needing to use their engines.

Reportedly,  when taxiing using jet engines, an average aircraft consumes 126 gallons of fuel.  The TaxiBot towing a plane uses only 7 – 15 gallons – a substantial savings and a reduction of thei airlines’ carbon footprint.  While still in testing, it seems likely that this pilot-controlled, energy saving system or something like it will be coming to an airport near you.
