How green a light bulb? How much green in my pocket?

So, was I “penny wise” and “pound foolish”?  My son and I were at the hardware store looking to buy a replacement floodlight for a recessed light in our kitchen.  We’ve been slowly replacing the incandescent bulbs with the compact fluorescent bulbs.  But, those CFLs dont seem to give off enough light.

Well, I figured I’d splurge and buy an LED bulb.  First, it uses less energy; second, it doesn’t use mercury; third, it was brighter; and fourth, it should last longer.  According to the sign in the hardware store, it should last 25 times longer than an incandescent and 2.5 times longer than a CFL (which should last 10 times as long as a standard bulb).  Splurge I did – the LED (while very bright), cost almost 6 times as much as the CFL!

I found great humor in the fact that (unless my High School Spanish is just plain wrong), that in Spanish, the bulb will only last 13.7 years, while in English it will last 22.8 years.  I’ll let you know how it’s doing in 2034.
